I can’t tell you how much I love Thai food; nothing brings me more joy than seeing a steaming plate of pad thai or bowl of fiery bowl of tom yum goong.

Well, it turns out we have only scratched the surface when it comes to Thai food. There are plenty of scrumptious Thai dishes from other regions we have yet to explore.

This is where Baan Ying comes in, with their One Meal Around Thailand. Available now till 30 September 2019, diners can experience an unprecedented Thai feast. Baan Ying is known for their home-style Thai cooking, with many menu items inspired by recipes from Northern Thailand.

This meal will feature authentic flavours of North, South, North-East and Central Thailand. Your tastebuds are definitely in for a ride!

Their Superior Set comes in at S$58.80++ for two persons with the two main items, the Deluxe Set is good for four people S$128.80++ with four main items.

Lastly, if you have a large group of friends, I highly recommend the Grand Tour Set which is good for eight people and comes up to S$298.00++ with six main items, where you can sample all the regional dishes Baan Ying has to offer.

We began with a well-loved Thai classic with a little twist. We had Larb Gai (Spicy Chicken Salad) served to us canapé style. A favourite Northeastern dish and I can see why. This was spicy and addictive, a great start to a meal.

This was followed by Nam Prik See Pak (Chilli Dip of four regions). Nam Prik is a type of Thai spicy chilli sauce that varies from region to region. Nam Prik is usually eaten with raw or boiled vegetables so you can fully appreciate the nuances of the chillis.

According to ‘John’ Songsorn Junsunjai, the co-founder of Baan Ying, this is an absolute Thai staple. After all, what better way to showcase the different regions of Thailand but through their chilli?

The Soup Makuer has to be my favourite, which was made from boiled, tender eggplants seasoned with Thai anchovy paste and dried chilli powder. This doesn’t look like it, but, boy, this was not for the faint-hearted.

Even my dining companion who is a real chilli head found this quite formidable as well.

We were served another Thai classic, Som Tum Tad (green papaya salad platter with side dishes)A quintessential item when it comes to Thai food, Baan Ying’s green papaya salad really hit the mark for me. It had fresh and piquant slivers of green papaya accompanied by various toppings such as peanuts, eggs and pork belly.

Don’t forget those generous slices of pork belly which will help quell the heat from those chillies, and who doesn’t love thick fatty slices of pork? This was refreshing, sweet and salty all at the same time â€”exactly what I expect of a green papaya salad.

For the mains, I decided to go for something a little different and out of my comfort zone. I went for Gaeng Som Pae Sah (fried seabass in tamarind soup). This is a sour curry dish which features a combination of sweet vegetables, deep-fried sea bass and tamarind.

The hunky chunks of seabass tasted sweet and fresh and served as a good contrast to the tangy tamarind curry.

The Sator Pad Goong (stir-fried bitter bean with shrimp) was another highlight of the night. Commonly known as stink bean, sator is a popular vegetable that can be found in many Southeast Asian dishes.

Most Southern Thais enjoy this bean raw or stir-fried. Here, the beans are fried with shrimp paste, fresh shrimp and chillies

The bean was rather pungent (hence, the name) and they are somewhat of an acquired taste. The dish was spicy and was perfect with some steamed rice.

We finished the meal with Crème Brûlée Cha Thai (Thai milk tea creme brulee). A definite crowd-pleaser, this creamy dessert had those astringent notes reminiscent of the Thai drink. This made for a dainty and sweet end to the meal for sure.

If you can’t wait to get your hands on these delectable Thai dishes, Baan Ying offers their One Meal Around Thailand in various lunch and dinner sets.

It gets even better; every diner who orders One Meal Around Thailand will stand a chance to win a three-day, two-night trip to Bangkok inclusive of flight, accommodation, a meal in Baan Ying, Bangkok and a pair of tickets to a Thai boxing show! Thai food never tasted this good.
