Wellness is every bit as important as fitness in the books of this Shape Fit Girl 2019 finalist.
Ng Hui Ru (@huiru.fitbossbabe) radiates positivity and it shows up on her beaming smile and dimples that she flashes at any obstacle she meets – including a deflated tyre during her 21km cycling segment of last year’s sprint triathlon in Bali. Having played sports such as netball and ultimate frisbee since she was nine, it was only natural that the 27-year-old ACE-certified personal trainer and wellness coach grew to become a big fan of group exercises. She spends three to four days a week conducting group classes and getting her sweat on with her workout buddies. Get to know more about Hui Ru with these five facts about her fit lifestyle.
IF I COULD ONLY WORK OUT WITH ONE EXERCISE TOOL, IT WOULD BE THE RESISTANCE BAND – HANDS DOWN. I love the versatility of this super portable equipment. Resistance band exercises are so effective in toning your arms, back, thighs, glutes and abs. Plus, it’s super affordable!

I BELIEVE WELLNESS AND FITNESS COME IN A PACKAGE. You can’t have one without the other. After suffering from digestive issues and a period of low energy when I was 20, I realised the need to pay more attention to my diet, to understand the nutrients my body needed. This episode sparked my journey to become a wellness coach, to help others get on the right track healthwise.
MY BIGGEST FITNESS INSPIRATION IS @WHITNEYYSIMMONS. I’ve been following her on Instagram for two years and I get many workout ideas from her unique routines. Her videos are fun to watch because of her bubbly character and sarcastic humour. I aspire to be like her, to spread more joy and positive vibes to those around me.
IT WASN’T EASY BECOMING A VEGETARIAN WHEN MY FAMILY RUNS A FOOD BUSINESS. However, I was compelled to make that change in my diet for animal compassion. While they weren’t outright supportive, neither did they discriminate or outcast me for it. They give me the freedom to eat what made me happy, which is something I’m very grateful for. Along the way, I learned that going meatless not only helped improve my cardiovascular health, but also to do my part in saving our wonderful planet!

BY THE END OF 2019, I HOPE TO DO A PROPER PULL-UP. I tried and loved bouldering, and am determined to get better at it. To build the upper-body strength I need, I’m currently powering my way through a 90-day challenge, where I do five assisted pull-ups using my trusty resistance band every day. Though I still can’t do a pull-up, I can definitely feel myself getting stronger day by day. Consistency is key!
