7 stylish ways to rock the Scrunchie because the trend is back!

Scrunchies are so ’90s. And that is exactly why they’re coming back.

For all the nineties trends that have found a place once again in our routines and our hearts — chokers, brown lipsticks, Steve Madden platforms – there’s the scrunchie, the butt of all bad-hair jokes. But lately, during workouts, at the office, or on a dash to the nearest supermarket – we’re repeatedly favouring this key accessory when it comes to handling our tresses!

But can you really blame us? Hot celebs have also been jumping back on the scrunchie bandwagon and making them actually look.. dare we say.. cool.

At the Armani Privé Fall Couture 2019, models walked the runway with little scrunchie hats perched precariously atop their heads.

Perhaps another reason behind the scrunchie revival is because of its functional use. Unlike regular hair ties which can cause your hair to break off and fall out, scrunchies are much gentler on your locks.

Your hair gets damaged most during detangling when using traditional hair ties but scrunchies provide an extra layer of padding between your strands and the elastic band. Scrunchies also have weaker tension, so they’re less likely to damage your hair when you let it loose.

Especially if you suffer from migraines, scrunchies are perfect for you as they bend with your hair, never pulling it from its roots (which is what causes headaches traditionally!) No pulling also means no hair loss, thinning or receding hairlines.

Clearly scrunchies aren’t going anywhere anytime soon so we might as well break down our favourite ways to style the scrunchie!

1. Scrunchie Ponytail

Lizzo made a statement with this look, letting everyone know that ponytails with a scrunchie is now in again. Because of how easy and comfortable this hairstyle is, it’s also a great at-home hairstyle!

The key is in tying up your hair at a desired level using a regular hair tie, and then using the scrunchie on top for a more fashionable look. Remember to fluff our your scrunchie with your fingers to make sure all the elastic underneath is concealed!

2. Classic Messy Bun

This style is best for longer hair and is easier than it looks. All you need to do is to create a large bun, and then slip a scrunchie over it for the classic ballerina look!

3. Silk on Scrunchie

You don’t need to tie a silk ribbon around your hair elastic (which is much harder than it looks), when it’s built right into your scrunchie! Perfect for shorter hair, tie a low bun at the nape of your neck and wrap a scrunchie with extended silk ribbon onto it.

Who says elegant hairstyles have to be difficult?

4. Half-Up Style

Want to keep the hair out of your face, while soaking in the resurgence of this ’90s trend? Throw back all the hair at the front of your face into a top knot while letting the remaining hair loose. Top it off with a medium-sized scrunchie and you’re good to go.

The coolest part about a half-up style? It’s somehow both polished, and effortlessly cool at the same time.

5. Braided Scrunchie

Braided hairstyles are always a hit for a more put-together look. There are really a ton of ways to wear the scrunchie with braids – Ranging from fishtail braids, to french braids, to side braids, to regular braids and more. The easiest is the classic – a regular braid with a scrunchie at the end – cute and very gentle on your hair too!

For an extra oomph, try a french braid that stops at the nape of your neck and top it off with a scrunchie. Phoebe Buffay from FRIENDS anyone?

6. Layered Twisted Pony

So you’ve mastered all the scrunchie hairstyles and are looking to level up. Well, this layered twisted hairstyle is actually deceptively easy.

Simply split your hair into four sections from the top to the bottom of your head. Tie the first section in a ponytail starting with the top-most one.

Still on the first ponytail, split your hair in the middle above your scrunchie, flip your ponytail and put it through the gap you created when you split your hair. Then repeat the same with the remaining three sections! Consider yourself a master of scrunchies when you’ve achieved this look.

7. Scrunchie on wrist

If all else fails, you can still make a statement with a scrunchie – on your wrist! Stack them on your wrists just like you would a bracelet.

Remember, Jason Momoa can work scrunchies on his wrist at the Oscars, so now this is officially a cool thing to do.

If you’re looking for cheap and chic scrunchies, there are tons of them available at e-commerce stores like Lazada, and Shopee.
