It’s an undeniable truth that sipping on our beloved cup of boba can cost a pretty penny. When I saw that æç¹ç³ Dot Sugar from Maxwell Food Centre offers boba from S$2.90, I had to check it out.
Nestled amongst the bustling stalls at Maxwell Food Centre, Dot Sugar offers a wide variety of drinks, ranging from your usual Brown Sugar Fresh Milk (S$2.90 for medium, S$3.50 for large) to their more unconventional Pei Pa Gao Milk Tea With Pearl (S$3.50).
Dot Sugar also offers a modest selection of desserts to cool off from the sweltering heat. What’s more, if you get two bowls, you get the second bowl half off! Now that’s a good deal.
Seeing as it is one of the most popular drinks in the bubble tea sphere, I had to get the Brown Sugar Fresh Milk. At only S$2.90, all I can say is, you get what you pay for.
This cup was sorely lacking on the brown sugar syrup and when I did sip it, it was lacklustre at best. The pearls were also rather bland and chewier than I would have liked.
Seeing as Dot Sugar has quite a number of kaleidoscopic drinks, I took a chance on The Flying City (S$3) which is made with butterfly pea, yoghurt and a strawberry purée. Certainly quite pretty to look at, I just hoped it tasted as good as it looked.
This one was a winner, sweet and fruity, the strawberry purée was fresh but not cloying. A marked improvement from the first drink.
Seeing as I was hankering for some desserts, I went ahead and ordered their Mango Pomelo Sago (S$3.50) and Peach Resin Soup (S$ 3.20).
The Mango Pomelo Sago was smooth and fragrant, with a generous portion of bright yellow mango cubes swirling in the bowl.
Each spoonful was refreshing and quite delightful indeed, a must-try if you head to Dot Sugar.
Even though the Peach Resin Soup was decent, it was rather forgettable.
As I started to leave, there was already a queue snaking around Dot Sugar. While I do agree the prices are undoubtedly attractive and wallet-friendly, for me, the drinks are just not up to par.
But if you are in the area and need a fix, why not?
