What is it like to have your hair cut by a hairstylist who is the go-to maestro of Hollywood stars?
I had the chance to find out for myself when I visited La Maison Des Stars, a luxury salon at The Fullerton Hotel, helmed by Christian Serafini, who spent seven years in Beverly Hills handling the hair of prominent celebrities before moving to Singapore.
The salon is spacious and has a monochrome interior that looks sleek and sophisticated. Despite its size, La Maison Des Stars only seats up to three clients at a time, which means you get a very exclusive and intimate experience.
I met with Serafini, who very quickly gave me his recommendations for my new ‘do: he told me he thought the length worked for me so he was going to keep it, but it was definitely very out-of-shape, so he was going to trim it such that it looked more polished. I told him that to also consider a look that would be easy for me to style on my own too, because I didn’t wish to spend too much time getting my hair primped in the morning.
Once we had decided on what he was going to do for me, he led me to the basin to have my hair washed. I had expected an assistant to help me with the hair washing process – but I was surprised that Serafini did it himself. The experience was also a little different from what I associated with other luxury salons in Singapore; don’t expect to be asked if the water was comfortable or look forward to a pampering head massage, Serafini was very swift with the process – hair washing was a means to an end. And to him, what mattered most was an amazing haircut at the end of the day.
It was an absolute delight watching Serafini work with the scissors. His cuts were precise, bold, and decisive. His snips were rapid. He knew exactly what he was going for and he spent no time hesitating. And he looked like he was dancing. I was told that Serafini uses a signature technique and handles hair according to the natural hair flow of every guest. The cuts are tailored according to each individual’s face shape and hair type.
And then, he was done.
“Do you like it?” he asked me.
I could find no fault to it. It wasn’t an outrageous change to my original look, but I definitely looked cleaned up.
Just as I was ready to go. Serafini stopped me and told me he thought he could work on the look a little more.
Meticulously, he took a few cuts here and there, and before I knew it, the shape of my hairstyle was even more polished than before. As he scrutinised how every strand of my hair stick from the entire look and trim them accordingly, I felt like my hair were a bonsai, pruned by an artist.
“You are a perfectionist, aren’t you?” I asked him.
“I only have one job – that is to cut hair – and I want to do it well,” he replied.
So this was how it was like to watch a master at work.
