Local start-up brand Bakestarters is an online baking store that specialises in selling baking kits that have been pre-portioned for people. That’s great for those who don’t want to waste time and space gathering or storing excess ingredients.
This Mid-Autumn Festival, they are bringing back some of their best-selling no-bake mooncake kits as well as introducing some unique flavours such as the Ondeh Ondeh Snowskin Mooncake Kit (S$29.95++). Each kit comes with all the ingredients you’ll need and a step-by-step recipe card.
Of course, we had to try the locally-inspired flavour especially when it gives us an opportunity for a hands-on experience.
Since all the ingredients required to make the mooncakes have already been scaled, packed and sealed, all you have to do is follow the instructions on the recipe card.
This is a great alternative for those who want to try making mooncakes from scratch but without the fuss. Our Gula-Melaka filling and the Pandan Snowskin turned out nicer than we thought.
One thing about this hassle-free baking kits is that there is little room for error because the ingredients are all pre-measured and thus in limited quantities. This made us slightly worried about making a mistake.
However, if you were to follow the recipe card properly as we did, the treats will turn out fine.
Each kit yields about 15 pieces of mooncakes, which is more than what you would get if you were to purchase boxes of mooncakes from retail stores. We wanted smaller mooncakes so we can have more servings, so we adjusted the sizes of each piece accordingly.
Should you need the Mooncake Moulds (S$6), simply add it into your cart. The moulds come in five different designs which can be easily attached to the plunger.
Imprinting the design on the Pandan Snowskin was easy, and made it look just like a traditional mooncake.
Given that it was our first try, I think that we did a pretty good job.
Though there’s still definitely room for improvement, we had a lot of fun getting our hands dirty.
This can be a bonding activity with your friends and family. In addition to the fragrance of Pandan Snowskin, the taste of the Gula Melaka and Coconut Flakes filling really shone through as well.
If you’re thinking of gifting the mooncakes, there are Gift Boxes (S$5.50 for 15 pieces) available on their website so you can show off your handcrafted mooncakes to your friends and family.
Some of the other flavours that they have are Earl Grey Lavender White Chocolate Truffle Snowskin Mooncake (S$34.95++), Earl Grey Dark Chocolate Truffle Snowskin Mooncakes (S$33.95++) and the brand-new Yuzu Rose Snowskin Mooncakes (S$30.95++).
