Youtube gurus and makeup artists are always seen with a professional makeup brush – heck, even a few brushes – blending out eyeshadows into a beautiful gradient.
And then there’s us – whose favourite application tool is our fingers.
But here’s the good news that will stop us from feeling ashamed about our dirty fingers: beauty brands are hearing our preference and are creating eyeshadows that are actually designed for finger application! Oh, yes.
At a recent meet-up to learn more about Marc Jacob’s Holiday collection, the brand’s Southeast Asia Regional Artistry Ambassador Michael Brown told Daily Vanitythat the best way to use its See-Quins Glam Glitter Single Eyeshadow is with fingers instead of brushes.
“If you use a brush, the pigments loosen and you create a mess,” he explains. On the other hand, using your finger allows the pigments to pack together into a bold and vibrant look.
And the best finger application method for these gorgeous eyeshadows? Brown says you simply “press and massage”.
‘Press and Massage’
Demonstrating the technique to the media, Brown showed that we just had to load up our finger (any one you prefer) with the eyeshadow, press it onto the eyelids, and then massage it out.
The best part about using our fingers is that you can easily control the payoff – for a light wash of colour, apply a thin layer on your lid. For a more saturated pigment, pack on the colour a few more times. The warmth from your finger also helps with melting the product onto your lids so it looks more skin-like and not like the colour is just sitting on top.
We tried it for ourselves and are simply in love with eyeshadows that are created for finger application. It makes it easier for everyone – newbies included – to feel less intimidated about using eyeshadows since it’s easier to reach the curves and nooks of the eyelids more easily with a more familiar tool (your fingers). And if you make a mistake, simply use a clean finger or a soft tissue to wipe off the shadow!
And if you’re in need of a mid-day makeup pick-me-up at work, applying a fresh coat of eyeshadow using your fingers is both cute and convenient. Forget lugging along the different brushes in your makeup kit, all you’ll need to bring is your pot of eyeshadow!
Here are more tips to using your fingers to apply eyeshadow
Hand Hygiene
When using your digits to apply eyeshadow, make sure your hands are freshly washed to prevent any eye infection or germs entering your sensitive eyes. Also make sure your nails are groomed to avoid poking yourself in the eye.
Use Tape for a crisp look
Who says it’s impossible to achieve a sharp eyeshadow look with finger application? Here’s a nifty hack to give you a crisp eye look each time – simply stick some tape at the corner of your eye and work on your eyeshadow using your fingers as usual. Once you’re done, remove the tape and you have a clean line where your eyeshadow ends!
Your hand is basically a brush set
Always start with your dexterous index finger as it’ll give you optimal control for the base layer. For the smokey effect, use your middle finger to work the product from the centre to the outer corner of your eye. Your pinky is the perfect size for an inner eye highlight! If fingers are enough for Hailey Bieber to apply her eyeshadow, it’s gotta be good enough for us too!
If you’re now raring to use your fingers on your lids for your next eye look, but are not sure on which particular eyeshadow to choose – like a true beauty BFF – we’ve got that covered for you too! Don’t be surprised to know that some eyeshadows were created specifically to be applied with fingers! We’ve got a whole list ahead for you to choose from.
